In Middle School, Students are assigned a different art challenge each trimester. This provides opportunities for innovation and problem solving, teaches how to work with different media and techniques and allows students to create art that is focused on a theme.
GRADE 6: Trimester one- Who's behind the Mask? Create an original mask using plaster, paper mache', cardboard or recycled materials. You will write about the person wearing the mask and what symbolism is connected to it. This is an integrated project with Mrs. Johnston in language arts. Trimester two-A Fantasy character design based on you. Do you have powers? wings? what are you wearing? do you have a spirit animal? etc. Trimester three - graphic novel or comic strip come up with a story line and draw a comic or graphic novel - 2 pages plus a cover
GRADE 7: Trimester one- Realistic, Abstract and Non-Objective create a realistic art piece, an abstract piece and a non-objective piece. You may make one work separated into 3 sections or 3 separate images. Trimester two- pick a famous painting and re-create it in 3D the final 3d piece can be a stand alone or relief sculpture. Trimester three-Pencil vs camera re-draw a part of you in an interesting/surrealistic manner
GRADE 8: Trimester one- Collaged Landscape - Find a photo of a place that is important to you in some way. Create an art piece that represents that place using the medium of collage. Trimester two- Trashion Fashion - Make a wearable item or two using cardboard, trash bags and/or recycled materials in the art room Trimester three- Self-Portrait create an artwork that relates to you in some way. It can be realistic, abstract or mixed media.
